Spikes planted on a surface and combed by a noise field. The same quill is grown on a grid, a plane, a sphere, a cylinder wall and the inside of a tunnel — and the surface is what changes the picture, not the spike. The mirrored-noise variant is the one that surprised me: symmetry turns a bed of teardrops into a starburst.
